As I just posted in the discussion board, GIMP is making me lose my hair. Here's the one image that I got to work when I first downloaded it. However, I can't get anything to do anything now other than resize or crop. I did this one by selecting the foreground and then desaturating the background.

If it makes you feel better, photoshop elements is making me pull my hair out too! My computer does not like the software, and it is really slow! Plus, I still really don't know what I am doing, and I don't find it very intuitive. I guess I will just continue to have to experiment.
ReplyDeleteYour photo looks great though!
Good luck!
GIMP IS MAKING ME GO BALD AS WELL!I have been so frustrated and am so angry at how my photos turned out, but your picture is awesome and i really like it a lot!

Your photo looks nice. It seems like the background has the people moving with the blur option. Pretty cool effects - Glad to have you back in the states...were you anywhere near the earthquake! How tragic!
ReplyDeleteI can see that you might rip your hair out, my six hour adventure with photoshop promoted the same emotion for me. Still a very cool picture, separating the background and foreground makes for a great picture. I honestly figured you had cut and paste one over the other. Very nice, cant imagine how it will look when you get a hang of it.

Paula,
ReplyDeleteNope, the only thing I did to this picture was change part to greyscale. The moving people in the back is part of the original image.
You know the frustration with any new software is called the learning curve. You just have to try the tools and if it doesn't work, go to the tutorials. If the ones I posted don't work go to the Net and search for GIMP tutorials that will be more helpful. Since GIMP is freeware there is a ton of stuff about it online.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a believer in spreading out these learning sessions. Too many of you (not sure if this is you, Beth, but I know it is some others) are trying to learn the program in one session of a few hours which turn into many hours, which indeed turn into hair pulling. You need time to see where you're stuck, get help, try again, and then walk away and come back another day :-) I have empathy. When I first learned PS I thought I would kill someone, or my computer. What helped was having a one day tutorial in a small group where I could do my own work but ask for help and get it the minute I needed it. Often it is just one sentence that will move you beyond total frustration. Feel free to ask for help after you've exhausted the other options I mention above, I'm here. I am a PS user rather than a GIMP user, but I can find you the answer, I"m pretty sure '-)
