Inside an Artist

This was something assigned to watch for my Portfolio Development class, however I felt the need to share it. This is a glimpse inside the mind of Picasso, one of my favorite artists since childhood. Watching how he works brought to light for me how we all, as artists, follow a fluid process that sometimes ends in unexpected places.

Perspective

The assignment this week in my digital photography class was to choose two pictures of the same focus shot from different angles. I have chosen two images taken on January 21, 2010 at Cape Zanpa. I shot both with my Canon PowerShot SX20 IS during the late afternoon hours. The tide was coming in and we were watching a storm circle around us while we climbed the coral cliffs. Because of the climbing I didn't have my tripod with me.

Swirl. Original is 3264 x 2448. Displayed here the image is 500 x 375. Focal Length 5. F 2.8. Exposure 1/60.

Greetings!

Welcome to my blog! My name is Elisabeth, but I prefer Beth. If I had to say where I am "from" it would be New Jersey, however I have moved around quite a bit in the last 11 years including Quebec and various parts of Vermont. At the moment I am living in Okinawa with my other half, Steven, who is active duty Air Force and finishing up his tour here this spring. This is a blog following my growth as a photographer.

I've had a lifelong passion for photography since I got a hold of my mother's camera as a toddler. At age five I was given my very first camera and still have those first pictures I took. Some of them are quite amusing! I was lucky that in high school we had received a short-term state grant to fund an arts intensive diploma program. This meant that though I took traditional classes, I was able to spend about half of my school day focusing on my art. My "major" was film photography. I practically lived in the darkroom, but I also spent time dabbling in ceramics. Due to a lack of funds to support my passion for black and white film, I have branched into the digital age in the last three years and am working on building my professional portfolio as I haven't had much time to truly focus on it since senior year of high school.

My “babies” are a Nikon FM 10 (though it’s currently back stateside), a Canon Powershot SX20 IS (the lens just starting fritzing over the weekend, I need to see if the BX camera shop can help me), and a Sony Cybershot DCS-W290. I don’t really believe in doing a whole lot of digital manipulation and mostly stick to techniques that I could also do in a darkroom so I’m brand new to the world of GIMP.

Since Steven and I will never be in one place for more than three years at a time (at least not for the next 18 years), my work must be portable and flexible. Over the next few years I hope to start a web based business to sell my photography along with jewelry and fiber art as a second income. I'd also like to be able to show my photography along our journey, though this will be somewhat dependent on the areas we are stationed, as I haven’t been able to participate in a gallery since high school. I don't have much experience with marketing myself however.
